Olaf Saumer was born into the heart of Germany. He grew up in the rural spa of Bad Emstal and developed his passion for movies from early childhood. This was Steven's and George's fault. The first big-screen movie was Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and the first video ever purchased was George Lucas' Star Wars. It's these two movies that spawned a passion for collecting videos which lasts till today.After finishing school he served 3 year apprenticeship in retailing and went on to pass his A-levels in Economics and Administration. His desire to have something to do with the movies was still there but the right time and the right idea seemed to be missing. After completing his national service he joined several movie- and TV-productions as an intern in several areas, cutting, camera and direction, to work out what the right idea and time might be. This included working for the movie production companies of the TV stations SAT1, RTL, PRO7, ARD and ZDF.1999, during an internship with the German TV Station HR, he was accepted into the Kunsthochschule Kassel (University for the Arts), which is led by documentary director and writer Prof. Manfred Vosz, after passing a qualifying examination.Since then he worked on various productions and also led his own movie projects. His individual style has evolved and blossomed in this time. Hard to define, it could be described as a fusion of visual movie makers like Giuseppe Tornatore, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton mixing with the experimental approach of Jean-Luc Godard.His films are the work of a true "cineaste", someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of film and film technique, who is able to make tried-and-true techniques as fresh and as vibrant. He believes the biggest driver for making movies in Germany, is to search out the apparent divide between blockbuster movies and art-house movies for new opportunities. In this wide open space he has found his playing field to create his types of movie.At the moment Saumer is working on his final project for University with the working title "The Suicide Club", which should be released summer 2007.
