Somy was born on March 25, 1974 in Karachi, Pakistan, to an Iraqi mother, Tehmina, and a Pakistani father, Madan. She has two sisters, Hina and Huma, and a brother, Mohammed, who is the youngest. She studied in Convent of Jesus & Mary High School in Karachi up until the age of 7, then re-located to Florida, USA, along with her mom and brother.She re-located to Bombay and was involved in several modeling assignments as well as appearances in 9 movies, which unfortunately, were unable to launch her career. Her career in Bollywood spanned from 1993 to 1997. She was leading actor Salman Khan's girlfriend after he broke up with his former flame, Sangeeta Bijlani.In 1999 she returned back to the U.S.A. and appeared in some radio talk-shows on social and political issues.She has obtained a degree from New York Film Academy on film making; a degree in psychology from Nove Southeastern University in Florida; and a degree in journalism from the University of Miami.She has produced 4 documentaries on 'Abortion', 'Teenage Suicide', 'Domestic Violence' and 'Lives of Muslim Women'.Her sister, Hina, an immigration attorney, is married to Robert, and has a son named Christopher.
